Billionaire Elon Musk is not going ahead with Tesla electrics and will explore the use of hydrogen by 2025. The American CEO and tech lover plans to introduce a new fuel that will soon be on the roads. In a hint, Musk wants to dump EVs and use what he once called ‘stupid’..
Musk drops a hint to introduce a new fuel
The South African-born tech entrepreneur is known for his dominance in the electronic vehicle sector, but he wants to go for hydrogen-fuelled cars. Despite initially criticising them, he seems to have changed his mind.
As reported by publications such as TheDiary24, Musk recently hinted at a move to hydrogen after criticising it on various platforms. Musk said, “That going hydrogen is a stupid idea,” and he clearly did not see why automakers made such a decision.
“The most dumb thing I could possibly imagine for energy storage,” he said.
He added that he has been questioned about hydrogen roughly 200 times and that it’s critical to realise that hydrogen is not a good option “if you’re looking for a way to store energy”.
In his personal opinion, Musk has been totally against switching to H2 and he felt as if it was a waste of resources to consider that.
Will Musk consider a switch from EVs to Hydrogen?
Will all his documented statements criticising the move to hydrogen, Musk is now seriously considering a move to H2. According to the report, his company Tesla, is looking to fill the road with what he previously called “stupid” fuel by 2025. This move is indeed surprising but what changed?
“This tactical change marks a substantial departure from Tesla’s conventionally battery electric vehicle (BEV)-focused approach to renewable energy. The corporation and the larger automotive sector have new opportunities as a result of the choice to investigate hydrogen fuel cells,” reports the publication.
It is also reported that the main goal of building a more resilient and diverse energy ecosystem is what motivates Musk and Tesla to transition to hydrogen. During a recent press conference, Musk stated that they have always been at the forefront of innovation in clean energy.
One promising addition to their current battery-electric vehicles is hydrogen fuel cells.
What does the industry say to Musk’s view?
In response to Musk’s sentiments, the chairperson of the H2 Mobility Energy Environment Technology (MEET) organising committee Nam Hoon Kang seems to agree with Musk. He said hydrogen energy is “ridiculous,” and claimed that the current cost of creating hydrogen fuel and electricity is far too costly and difficult for even large companies to afford.
Kang also believes that the early stages of hydrogen are making it incompetent. While Tesla is reportedly investigating this option to change from EVs to hydrogen, the move is consistent with larger movements to identify alternate energy sources that may ultimately reduce production costs and increase access to clean energy.
Will Tesla’s future be dented?
Taking a look at the future of the company, it seems the future will remain undented. While this decision to go hydrogen will force Tesla to move away from electric vehicles for a while, it is also an opportunity for the company to embrace dual-fuel innovation.
“Investigating hydrogen might help Tesla broaden its product range, lessen its dependency on batteries, and potentially address some of the environmental issues related to lithium mining and battery disposal,” added TheDiary24.
“This tactical change not only strengthens Tesla’s standing as an innovator but also demonstrates its dedication to a resilient and sustainable energy future.”
On top of that, the move will also help boost Musk’s reputation as the world will be able to see how multi-innovative the company is.
