Information circulating in the motor industry suggests that Elon Musk is planning to launch a hatchback that will rival VW. According to auto publications, Musk is yet to name his latest offering under Tesla. One publication has it that it will be named Tesla Model 2.
Musk’s latest offering a serious threat to Volkswagen ID.2
While this will be an entry-level car, the electric car manufacturer, Tesla is working on launching a new hatchback. This car is positioned to battle it out against the German carmaker, VW ID2. Highmotor.com reports that this move comes after several ups and downs over the past few months.
Born in South Africa, the Tesla CEO and tycoon is working around the clock to introduce an entry-level hatchback that will be positioned as the entry-level vehicle in its range. This car is expected to be in a very attractive market segment, which the brand has not yet entered.
“We still don’t know what the name of this Tesla hatchback will be, although it is rumored that its final name will be Tesla Model 2,” reports the car magazine.
The Moment also understands that a British magazine, Autocar has announced that the date on which the compact will land on the market will be in 2023, a somewhat optimistic date considering that before this, the Tesla Cybertruck, the Roadster or the Semi must be introduced to the market.
Among other competitors, the Tesla Model 2 will look to challenge the likes of Nissan Leaf, the Citroën ë-c4 or the Kia Niro including other brands, thus consolidating itself as an affordable product with great equipment.
Musk’s latest car price range and features
Considering the success of the Model 3 in terms of sales, the Model 2 will be available on the market for around 21.000 Euros but Tesla may end up accumulating a large demand.
Talking about aesthetics, the Model 2 will follow the line that we already know in the brand with the Model 3, the Model S or the Model X, but with a differentiated rearguard as it is a hatchback model.
The great weapon that this compact will have is its battery. Batteries that will have a new technology that will allow it to increase autonomy up to 16%, reduce the costs of its production by up to 50% and up to five times more energy.
Production to take place in China
As the information suggests, the car will be made in China. The Model 2 hatchback’s autonomy will be around 400 kilometers.
Car reviews indicate that it’s a really good figure considering that its main competitor, the ID.3 in its entry version, has around 330 kilometers of autonomy in the WLTP cycle.
The Tesla manufacturing would take place in China, specifically in the brand’s Shanghai plant, although Coach, says that the vehicles destined for the European market will be produced in the large factory that the American brand has in Germany, due to the high demand that is expected for the affordable hatchback.”
CarWow.com posted that this new hatchback comes on the back of an announcement that Musk denied or rubbished the reports that a new Tesla Compact EV will be scrapped.
Earlier this year, Reuters reported that Tesla would scrap the new compact EV in favour of the fully autonomous Robotaxi, while citing an anonymous Tesla insider.
However, Musk moved swiftly to rubbish the news as he took to social media to quash these rumours, categorically stating in a post on X that “Reuters is lying”.
